With 9 cases confirmed and 11 under investigation, GPs have been advised by UKHSA to issue antibiotics to “anyone who visited Club Chemistry between 5 and 7 March and to University of Kent students, if they have been asked to seek preventative treatment. This is so that anyone who has travelled home, or away from Kent, can easily access this important preventative treatment close to them.”

“UKHSA also continues to advise anyone who visited Club Chemistry on 5, 6 or 7 March to come forward for preventative antibiotic treatment as a precautionary measure. This can be collected from the following sites, which remain open whilst people are still coming forward for the preventative treatment:

Senate Building at University of Kent, CT2 7NZ – open from 9am to 8pm.

Gate Clinic, Kent and Canterbury Hospital, Ethelbert Road, Canterbury, CT1 3NG – open from 8.30am to 7.30pm.

Westgate Hall, Westgate Hall Road, Canterbury, Kent, CT1 2BT- open from 8.30am to 7.30pm.

Carey Building, Thanet Hub, Margate Northwood Rd, Westwood, Broadstairs, CT10 2WA – open from 8.30am to 7.30pm.”

Signs and symptoms of meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia can include a fever, headache, rapid breathing, drowsiness, shivering, vomiting and cold hands and feet. Septicaemia can also cause a characteristic rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass. If you or anyone you know develops any of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately by contacting a GP, calling NHS 111 or dialling 999 in an emergency. Knowing the signs and taking early treatment can be lifesaving.

The human papillomavirus is very common and it is caught through intimate skin-to-skin and sexual contact with another person who already has it. Because it is a very common infection, most people will get it during their lifetime. There are many different types of HPV. Most HPV infections do not cause any symptoms and get better on their own. Some types do not clear up and can lead to cancer whilst others cause genital warts.

The human papillomavirus increases the risk of developing some cancers in later life including cervical cancer (cancer of the entrance to the womb), some mouth and throat cancers and some cancers of the anus and genital area. HPV causes more than 99% of all cervical cancer, the most common cancer among women under the age of 35. Most vaginal, vulval, penile and anal cancers are also caused by HPV.

The HPV vaccine protects against high risk HPV types that cause cancer including most cases (around 90%) of cervical cancer. Having this vaccine will also protect you against the 2 types of HPV that cause the majority of cases of genital warts. There is evidence from Australia, Denmark, Scotland and England that the vaccine is already having a major impact on HPV infections.

The HPV vaccine has been used in girls in the UK since 2008 and most women aged 15 to 24 years have now been given the vaccine. From September 2019, the vaccine has been offered to boys and girls aged 12 and 13 years. The vaccine protects boys against some kinds of cancer too and will stop them from passing on HPV to their future partners. It won’t protect you against any other sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia and it won’t stop you getting pregnant.

The HPV vaccine is offered to everyone starting in school year 8 (aged 12 to 13 years) and those offered the vaccine at school will remain eligible up to their 25th birthday. If you missed your vaccination, for whatever reason, you should speak to your school nurse (if you’re age 12-13) or GP surgery (if you’re age 14-24) about making another appointment. It’s best to make your appointment as soon as possible after your original one.

This is misleading as there is a specific criteria that has been set nationally for the safe roll out of this
medication.
Here’s an explanation of how it is being prescribed in Primary Care in Cambridgeshire & Peterborough.
NHS England and NICE have approved the use of Tirzepatide, which you may also know as
Mounjaro®️ or ‘the weight loss drug’, from primary care. You may well hear that Tirzepatide is
available from primary care from 23rd June 2025. However, in the first two years entry criteria have
been set by NHS England to a very small number of people. This is to allow safe entry of this
repurposed medicine into the health system.
Please only contact your GP Practice if you have:
BMI of 40kg/m2 or above (or 37.5 kg/m2 for people from South Asian, Chinese,
other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean ethnic backgrounds)
AND at least FOUR out of the following five health conditions which have already been
diagnosed by your GP or other health professional:
Established Type 2 diabetes
Hypertension requiring blood pressure lowering therapy
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
Obstructive sleep apnoea where treatment is indicated i.e. continuous positive
airway pressure (CPAP)
Dyslipidaemia requiring treatment.
If you meet the above criteria, the service will not be provided by GP Practices
GP Practices can refer you for assessment to the ‘Healthy You’ service - the provider
which has been commissioned locally to manage this service.
If ‘Healthy You’ decide you can be prescribed Tirzepatide, the ongoing responsibility of
the prescribing and monitoring remains with ‘Healthy You’. More information can be
found on the Healthy You website," class="wp-image-3099" srcset="https://www.cornfordhouse.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Tirzepatide-Patient-Information-leaflet-724x1024.jpeg 724w, https://www.cornfordhouse.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Tirzepatide-Patient-Information-leaflet-212x300.jpeg 212w, https://www.cornfordhouse.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Tirzepatide-Patient-Information-leaflet-768x1086.jpeg 768w, https://www.cornfordhouse.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Tirzepatide-Patient-Information-leaflet-1086x1536.jpeg 1086w, https://www.cornfordhouse.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Tirzepatide-Patient-Information-leaflet-1448x2048.jpeg 1448w, https://www.cornfordhouse.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Tirzepatide-Patient-Information-leaflet-1568x2218.jpeg 1568w, https://www.cornfordhouse.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Tirzepatide-Patient-Information-leaflet-scaled.jpeg 1810w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px" />

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), is a general term for conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels and causes 1 in 4 deaths in England. High blood pressure is the largest single risk factor for CVD and can increase your risk of serious and potentially life-threatening health conditions, such as heart attacks stroke, kidney disease and vascular dementia. However, as high blood pressure usually has no symptoms, it is estimated that 4.2 million people in England have high blood pressure without knowing it1.

New data has revealed that worrying numbers don’t know the potentially fatal effects of high blood pressure – with four in 10 (41 per cent) unaware that, if left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to heart disease, and over a fifth (22 per cent) being unaware that it can cause strokes and heart attacks2.

The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to get a blood pressure test, which is a free, simple, non-invasive procedure. If you’re aged 40 and over, you can get a free blood pressure check at your local participating pharmacy, without needing to book in advance.

Find a pharmacy that offers free blood pressure checks near you by searching “pharmacy blood pressure check” online or visit the NHS website directly here: LINK
